Week 1: Activity

The Phantom of the Opera is a timeless classic that strikes the inner heartstrings of anyone that reads, watches, or performs it. The novel follows the talented Christine Daae who, shortly after being cast in the opera hears a beautiful, unearthly voice sing to her. She believes that the voice belongs to The Angel of Music – a character from a story she was told as a child – and, having confirmed this, the voice offers her singing lessons. The Voice, however, belongs to Erik, a physically deformed and mentally disturbed musical genius who was one of the architects who took part in the construction of the opera. Leroux loved opera houses and his phantom is a beautifully dark concept, his descriptions of the theater are vivid and verging on the enchanting.  I love the story here, though the execution falls short of the faultlessness you would expect when you consider the sheer strength that surrounds the central plot and characters.
